The University Hospital Regensburg is the only tertiary health care provider in Eastern Bavaria, a region with approximately 2 Mill. inhabitants. About 30,000 in-patients and 110,000 out-patients are treated here every year. A case-mix-index of 1.86 makes Regensburg one of the leading German university hospitals. Also it is one of the most efficient tertiary health care providers in Germany.
The University Hospital is dedicated to supporting the Medical Faculty of the University of Regensburg in research and teaching. Currently, about 1,800 medical and dental students are enrolled, and our students regularly achieve top position in the nationally unified medical examinations. Thus, the University Hospital has achieved one of the most important goals of the Medical Faculty: top quality teaching and the training of competent medical staff.
The University Hospital has 833 beds and 40 day clinic treatment places and employs more than 3,500 members of staff: over 550 physicians and more than 1.000 nurses. The hospital accommodates 23 different departments and institutions as well as 6 clinical-theoretical institutes on a gross floor space of about 65,000 sqm.
Our state-of-the-art medical equipment is continuously upgraded to meet the ever-increasing demands. Particularly large medical devices such as, for example, PET-CT meet the standard of top international hospitals.
In 2006, additional buildings, mainly for teaching and research, were put into operation. Moreover, the planning process of a further research building as well as of a clinic housing the Department for Paediatrics and Adolescent Medicine could be finalised. This project to build a Children’s University Hospital was started by some members of staff and the East-Bavarian population in a nationally unique fund-raising campaign . This project named KUNO (Kinder-Universitätsklinik Ostbayern) raised 5.6 Mill. Euros within 20 months.
Through the joint effort of the University of Regensburg, the Medical Faculty and the University Hospital, Regensburg has become the second-largest centre for biotechnological research and development in Bavaria. The buildings "Biopark I" and "Biopark II" located at the University grounds are visible signposts for this development.
Together with the respective Bavarian Ministries of State, the people of the region and the regional business partners, the University Hospital Regensburg is going to stay highly committed to its path.
