History of the University Hospital

1962  18 July: Decision of the Bavarian State Parliament to found a university with the full range of subject areas in Regensburg. 
1969  Appointment of a commission to oversee the planning and structuring of the medical faculty.  
1970  Planning group begins work. 
1971  Architectural competition for the buildings of Regensburg University Hospital (Universit√§tsklinikum). 
1976  Reduction of the planned 1600 beds in the hospital to around 1000. 
1978  26 September: Foundation stone of the hospital is laid. Construction work begins on the first section, the Department of Dentistry and Stomatology. 
1984  Department of Dentistry and Stomatology opens. 
1985  Construction begins on the second section with around 500 beds. 
1992  Opening of the second section; admission of the first in-patients.  
1993  Decision of the Bavarian State government to proceed with the first part of the third section, containing 300 beds, without financial support from national government. 
1994  18 April: Ceremonial ground-breaking and beginning of construction of first part of the third section of the complex. 
1998/99  First part of the third section begins operation. Regensburg University Hospital now has 804 beds, 82 of which are in intensive care units and 12 equipped for dialysis. 
2002  25 March: Ground-breaking ceremony and beginning of construction on the second part of the third section, with two new buildings for research and teaching. 
2006  9 March: Second part of the third section begins operation, including a lecture theatre and seminar rooms, as well as a centre for the clinical-theoretical departments of preventative medicine, epidemiology, immunology and human genetics. 
2007  Roofing ceremony of the new building of the East-Bavarian University Department of Paediatrics (KUNO) and the research building D4. 
2009  24 September: Dedication of the Jos√© Carreras Centre for Somatic Cell Therapy. 
2010  11 January: Ceremonial opening of the new building of the East-Bavarian University Department of Paediatrics (KUNO). 
2014  The hospital currently has 833 beds and 52 treatment places for day-patients.
